A day of pan/zoom that had suddenly become unusable on a 1.2M-entity
drawing turned out to be no regression at all: an unattended NVIDIA
userspace update had been applied without a reboot, the Vulkan ICD could
no longer talk to the still-loaded kernel module, and wgpu silently fell
through to Mesa's llvmpipe. Nothing in the app said so. iced picks the
adapter and names it only under RUST_LOG, so the only evidence was 32
`llvmpipe-N` threads in /proc. The same silence covers WARP on Windows,
SwiftShader in browsers, and the case where wgpu finds no adapter at all
and iced quietly draws the chrome with tiny-skia while the shader widget
is dropped, leaving a blank viewport. This commit makes all of that
visible, on every platform, without new dependencies.
Detection (src/scene/pipeline/mod.rs)
-------------------------------------
`GpuStatus` is derived from two signals:
* `record_gpu_adapter`, run from `MultiPipeline::new` (once per device,
next to the existing uncaptured-error handler), reads
`Device::adapter_info()`, prints one `[gpu] adapter: <name> (<backend>,
<device type>, driver …)` line — stderr natively, `console.warn` on the
web, which has no stderr — and keeps a copy.
* `note_scene_draw`, run from `ViewportPane::draw`, counts how often the
viewport asked for a primitive. Every renderer makes that call; only
wgpu goes on to `prepare` and create a device. Three draws with no
device ever recorded therefore mean the primitive is being dropped.
The verdict is one of `Unknown`, `Hardware`, `Software(adapter)` or
`NoRenderer`. `Software` is `DeviceType::Cpu` — what Vulkan reports for
llvmpipe, DX12 for WARP and GL for a renderer string that gives it away —
plus a name match on the fallbacks browsers expose (SwiftShader, llvmpipe,
lavapipe, "Microsoft Basic Render"), because the WebGPU backend reports
every adapter as `Other` (gfx-rs/wgpu#8819). Metal has no software device,
so on macOS only `NoRenderer` can occur (a VM without a GPU); it is caught
by the draw count like everywhere else.
`gpu_status_if_changed` costs one atomic load per app message: a
generation counter moves only when a device is recorded or the draw count
crosses its threshold, so the app re-derives the verdict a handful of
times per session.
Notification (src/app/startup.rs, view/modal.rs, ui/statusbar)
-------------------------------------------------------------
`refresh_gpu_status` runs after every message. On a degraded verdict it
speaks through three channels, because many users never read the command
line:
* A popup, `ModalKind::GpuWarning`, queued once per verdict through the
startup-modal queue so it waits its turn behind the file open. It names
the adapter, states the consequence (slow navigation, unstable or
missing rendering) and gives the remedy that usually applies on the
running platform: a driver update not yet followed by a reboot on
Linux, a missing driver or a Remote Desktop / VM session on Windows, a
VM without a Metal device on macOS, hardware acceleration switched off
in the browser. "Don't show again for this device" stores
`GpuStatus::identity()` in `settings.gpu_warning_silenced`; keying it by
verdict means silencing "software rendering on llvmpipe" does not
silence a later, different failure.
* A status-bar pill in the theme's warning colours, `⚠ Software rendering`
or `⚠ No GPU renderer`. It is not a `StatusPill`, so it cannot be hidden,
and it stays for the session; clicking it reopens the popup, silenced or
not.
* A command-line entry through the new `CommandLine::push_warning`, which
is styled like an error but deliberately does not touch `last_error` /
`error_revision`: automation reads those to decide whether the command it
just ran failed, and a graphics warning is not a failed command.
`subscription()` requests frames only while the verdict is `Unknown` on a
document tab (the Start page draws no viewport), so the probe costs one
frame on a working GPU, three on none, then stops.
Verification
------------
* Live on the machine that had the incident, with the Vulkan loader
restricted to Mesa (`VK_DRIVER_FILES=…/lvp_icd.json WGPU_BACKEND=vulkan`):
popup → OK → pill → click reopens; "Don't show again" → restart → pill
only, no popup.
* `gpu_tests::the_adapter_is_reported_once_per_device` (ignored, needs an
adapter) asserts the classification on a real device; it was run on both
llvmpipe (`Cpu`) and an NVIDIA GT 1030 (`DiscreteGpu`).
* Unit tests cover the name heuristic, the verdict function, the identity
rule, the warning text with an adapter name that itself contains
parentheses and commas, the settings round trip and the command-line
semantics. New strings are in all 21 locales as the `gpu` Fluent group.

Ports FreeCAD's planegcs 2D geometric constraint solver to Rust as a new
crates/ocs_gcs workspace member, and wires it into the document/scene model
as a persistent SketchConstraintSet: Coincident, Horizontal/Vertical,
Parallel/Perpendicular, Equal, Tangent, Distance, Angle and Radius
constraints that re-solve live (including mid-drag, not just on release),
render glyphs and a DOF badge, flag conflicts with a one-click resolver
pill, and round-trip through save/load via an XRecord blob.
Also includes docs/command_reference.md (a statically generated reference
of every registered command and its prompt sequence) and
docs/named_parameters_design.md + docs/backlog.md, which hand off the next
queued feature (a named-parameter/expression table) and consolidate every
deliberate scope-down and open gap found along the way, so a fresh session
has a complete starting point.

A greyed-out option in a status-bar menu made the mouse pointer vanish.
A disabled button reports no mouse interaction at all, and a menu is an
overlay: when the overlay reports none, the cursor is decided by whatever
lies beneath it, which over the drawing is the canvas hiding the pointer
so it can draw the crosshair itself. Enabled rows were fine only because
they ask for a pointer and so never fall through.
Every row now answers for the cursor over it, doing something or not.
`mouse_area` fills in only where the content stays silent, so an enabled
row keeps the pointer it asked for.
Fixed for every status-bar menu rather than the one that showed it: they
all build their rows through the same place, and the next menu with a
disabled row would have had the same hole.

A status-bar menu closed as soon as the cursor left its own rectangle.
These menus hang off a pill barely wider than its icon, so reaching for a
row's text means moving up and across at once, and the diagonal passes
through the gap between the pill and the menu. Moving straight up worked;
moving toward the thing you were aiming at did not.
The safe area now extends one row of the bar in every direction, which is
the room that diagonal needs. The bar's row height stops being a literal
at its own call site and becomes ROW_HEIGHT, so the two stay together if
the bar is ever resized.

The readout learned to write lengths as 5'-6 1/2" and angles as
N 45d0'0" E, but typed input was still a bare parse::<f64>() — a
coordinate could be displayed and not entered. Give the formatters
their inverses.
parse_length takes feet and inches separated by a dash, a space, or
nothing, with the closing quote optional, and whole-plus-fraction in
any of those forms: 5', 60", 5'-9", 5'9-1/2, 9-1/2, 1/2. A leading
minus is a sign; the one inside 5'-9" is a separator, since after feet
there is nothing left to subtract from.
parse_angle reads the mark that says which convention an angle is in —
g for grads, r for radians, d/'/" for degrees-minutes-seconds, compass
letters for a surveyor's bearing — and reads a bare number in whichever
convention the drawing is set to.
ANGBASE and ANGDIR now apply, but only where they mean something. Which
way a thing points is measured from the drawing's zero and runs the way
it says; how wide an arc opens is the same number whatever zero is
counted from. format_direction and parse_direction are the pair for
directions, and the polar readout and polar input both go through them,
so the bearing shown is the bearing accepted. format_angle stays for
sizes, where applying a base angle would corrupt the value.
The command prompts follow the same rule, each classified rather than
swept: OFFSET distance, FILLET radius, CHAMFER distances, ARRAY and
MINSERT spacing, TRACE width, HELIX, and EXTRUDE height read lengths;
the four dimension text-rotation prompts, ARRAY's total angle and
INSERT's rotation read angles. MLINE's scale and INSERT's scale factor
are left alone — a multiplier has no unit to be written in. INSERT read
both through one parse; they are now separate.
The typed variants also take a decimal comma, which a single-value
prompt has no other use for. parse_length itself does not: inside a
coordinate the comma separates the axes.

The status-bar units button wrote INSUNITS, which nothing on screen reads.
INSUNITS only tells the drawing how to scale content arriving from
elsewhere, so picking a unit relabelled the drawing and changed nothing
visible — the selector looked broken because the variable it moved was
invisible.
Point the button at LUNITS instead, the setting that decides how every
coordinate and distance is written, and give the three questions the word
"units" runs together a place each:
- The button offers the five length formats, each shown beside a sample of
itself, so Engineering and Architectural are told apart by sight.
- UNITS / DDUNITS opens a real dialog: length and angle format and
precision, the direction angle zero points, whether positive angles run
clockwise, and the insertion unit. Its sample comes from the same
formatters the drawing uses, so it cannot drift from the readout.
- DWGUNITS converts. Model geometry, viewport framing, the header's length
defaults and each dimension style's scale all move together in one undo
step; paper space is left alone, since the sheet is still the same sheet.
Locked layers are converted too — a half-converted drawing would be at
two scales at once.
The coordinate readout formatted at four decimal places whatever the
drawing asked for; it now goes through the same format_length the
properties panel uses. That made the angle formats reachable in turn, so
degrees-minutes-seconds now carries the d/'/" marks that say which
convention it is, and surveyor's units are written at all.
Typed input is still plain decimal: a length the readout writes as
5'-6 1/2" cannot yet be typed back. ANGBASE and ANGDIR are stored but not
yet applied to displayed directions.

The right-click menu was pinned to the screen's bottom-left corner.
Each layout tab now records its screen bounds through a PosReport
wrapper (which learned runtime-built ids for the dynamic tab names),
and the menu anchors next to the clicked tab via the shared
status-bar popup positioning, falling back to the left edge only when
no bounds were recorded (#428).

Typed values were quantized to the f32 grid before reaching the
entity (e.g. a length of 2000.8 committed as 2000.8020), worsening
with magnitude. The interaction point layer was all glam::Vec3 (f32).
Two-layer fix:
1. Coordinate backbone -> f64. last_point, last_cursor_world,
dyn_anchor, dyn_ref become DVec3; UcsXform transforms, parse_coord,
the ucs helper fns, dyn_resolve_point, the OTRACK typed-distance
paths, command-line coordinate entry and the coordinate readout all
compute in f64. Screen/GPU/alignment stays f32 (snap engine, render
geometry, projection, UCS-icon/viewcube drawing) with casts only at
those boundaries.
2. Per-command committed storage -> DVec3. on_point already received a
DVec3, but many command impls narrowed it back to f32 (let pt =
pt.as_vec3(); Vec<Vec3> fields) and re-widened at build, quantizing
the committed coordinate. Migrated PLINE, SPLINE, MLINE, LENGTHEN,
INSERT, 3D primitives, every dimension/leader/mleader, ray, revcloud,
wipeout, attdef, table, tolerance, array center, mview, plot_window,
plus the QDIM_PLACE handler and qdim_collect_points. Preview,
hit-test and rubber-band paths keep f32 at the boundary.
Hatch manual boundaries are left for a follow-up: HatchModel.boundary
is structurally Arc<Vec<[f32;2]>> and needs a model-level widen.

App preferences were spread across six flat plain-text files (settings.txt,
recent.txt, recent_limit.txt, statusbar.txt, ribbon.txt, plot.txt), each with a
bespoke line parser and no grouping. Replace them with a single grouped JSON,
serialized via serde (enabling the derive feature; serde_json was already a
dependency).
- New app/config.rs: AppConfig { settings, recent, statusbar, ribbon, plot } →
<config>/settings.json (pretty JSON), load()/save().
- Make UserSettings, StatusBarConfig/StatusPill, CollapseMode and
PlotDialogState serde-derived; #[serde(skip)] marks the plot dialog's runtime
fields so only print preferences persist. Their bespoke .txt load/save is
removed.
- App gains current_config/apply_config/save_config: one AppConfig::load at
startup distributes into live state; every settings-change site
(persist_settings_if_changed, recent add/remove/limit, status-bar pill
toggle, ribbon density, plot commit) routes through save_config, which diffs
against the last write to avoid thrashing.
- Clean start: the old flat files are ignored (no migration). ocad.pgp stays a
separate hand-editable file.

The Coords pill always showed live absolute X,Y,Z, ignoring the drawing's
$COORDS (coords_mode) sysvar. Drive the readout from it:
- 0 static — the last picked point; the readout freezes between picks.
- 1 live — continuous absolute X,Y,Z (previous behavior, default).
- 2 polar — distance<angle relative to the last point while a command is
prompting for a point; absolute otherwise.
The cursor and last point are reported in the active UCS, matching the rest of
the readout. Clicking the pill cycles the mode 0→1→2→0 (CycleCoordsMode), marks
the tab dirty and echoes it; SETVAR COORDS still works. $COORDS round-trips per
drawing via acadrust's coords_mode.

The status bar showed all 17 pills out of the box. Hide the informational /
niche ones by default so the bar stays uncluttered — Coordinates, Show
Lineweight, Dynamic Input, Model/Paper Space, Drawing Units, Show
Transparency, Selection Cycling and Viewport Count. The user turns any of them
back on from the customization (gear) menu, which persists to statusbar.txt.
The main drafting toggles (Ortho, Polar, Otrack, Osnap, …) stay visible.
An existing statusbar.txt (even empty = user showed everything) is
authoritative; only a fresh install with no config gets the new defaults.

units_btn and scale_popup_btn were byte-identical apart from the message
they emit. Fold them into a single popup_pill(label, open, msg) helper so
every popup-opening pill goes through shared chrome, matching toggle_pill
(icon toggles) and split_pill (toggle + caret dropdown).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
The polar-tracking pill only right-click-cycled 15→30→45→90. Add an
AutoCAD-style angle picker opened from a caret on the pill: presets
90/45/30/22.5/18/15/10/5/1 plus a free-text field for any custom angle,
mirroring the existing units / scale status-bar popups. The chosen angle
persists like the other user settings.
Factor the shared chrome into one `split_pill(main, caret_msg, active,
open)` helper (+ `pill_text_color`) so the OSNAP and POLAR pills stop
hand-rolling the same outer border, background, caret and sizing — each
pill now only supplies its own main region. The caret is sized and
aligned to sit inside the single pill border on both.

Ribbon:
- A ▾ selector at the right of the tab row picks the tool-panel density —
Auto (size to window), Full, Compact, or Collapsed. The choice is persisted.
It hides itself when the tool row is already tight, giving the cramped tab
row its space back.
Start page:
- The Recent Documents card is restyled to match the Supporters card
(rounded corners, 20px padding, matching title + colours).
- Its scrollbar no longer sits on top of the row ✕ remove buttons (a gutter
is reserved).
- A footer control sets how many recent files to keep: [-] an editable count
[+] with the max shown. Typing applies on Enter; an over-max entry snaps to
the max. The limit is persisted and enforced on load and on every open.
- The "Support on Patreon" heart is now the SVG icon instead of a font glyph.
Config:
- Add a shared `config::config_dir()` helper; the recent-files and status-bar
stores now go through it instead of each re-deriving the path. New minus.svg
icon for the stepper.

All ribbon dropdowns (tool dropdowns, undo/redo history, and the layer /
colour / linetype / lineweight / style combos) and all status-bar popups
(scale, units, OSNAP, isolate, filter, customization menu, layout list)
now open directly at their widget instead of at a layout-estimated
position, and flip to the other side when the panel would cross a window
edge.
Each dropdown/pill widget is wrapped in a transparent PosReport that
records its screen bounds into a thread-local map on draw. The overlays
read those bounds:
- Ribbon: Ribbon::dd_anchor(id, panel_w, win_w) returns
(align_right, h_pad, top); position_ribbon_dropdown places the panel
below the widget, flipping right-aligned near the right edge.
- Status bar: popup builders take (pill_bounds, win_size) and call
popup::position_statusbar_popup / popup_anchor, opening just above the
pill and flipping left/right at the window edge.
The window size is now tracked (win_size, set on WindowResized). The old
layout estimators compute_dropdown_left / compute_layer_combo_left /
compute_prop_combo_left / compute_history_dropdown_left and
osnap_popup_right_offset are deleted.

Add shared adaptive-bar widgets in src/ui/wrap_bar.rs:
- WrapBar: two-block bar (lead + optional Fill middle + trail). Fits on
one row, otherwise the trailing block drops below; with no middle both
blocks flex-wrap in their own row bands and stack so a wrapped lead item
never shares a row with a trailing item.
- WrapFlow: CSS-style flex-wrap row that spreads its items across as many
rows as the width needs.
Ribbon tab row: quick-access buttons and undo/redo are merged into one
WrapFlow; the tabs are a second WrapFlow. Dropdown overlays anchor to the
measured (possibly taller) bar height instead of a hardcoded 28px.
Status bar: the hamburger menu plus the Model/layout tabs form one
WrapFlow; the status pills form another. The layout-tab scroll arrows and
horizontal scrollable are removed in favour of wrapping.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
The snap popup used a hardcoded 4 px right offset, pinning it to the
window's right edge — but the Osnap button sits well to the left, with up
to ten pills after it (Space, Scale, Units, Transparency, Isolate, …).
Anchor it by the summed width of the pills that follow Osnap, honouring
the user's per-pill visibility. iced gives the view no real layout
metrics, so the pill widths are estimated (icon pills fixed, labelled
pills approximate); the popup now opens by the button instead of the
corner.

The bottom status bar was hard to read: size-10 text labels in a 26px
strip. Make it legible and consistent with the drawing tab bar:
- Height 26 → 30 to match the document tab bar; the command-line input
pill matches too, so the three strips line up.
- Replace the drafting-aid toggle labels (ORTHO/POLAR/OSNAP/OTRACK/DYN/
LWT and the OCS pills ISO/QP/FILTER/SC/CLEAN/TPY) with 17px SVG icons;
the name stays in each pill's tooltip. Twelve new icons under
assets/icons/status, drawn in the existing 24×24 stroke style.
- Vertically centre every element via center_y, and bump all pill text to
size 12 with uniform padding plus larger chrome icons (menu, scroll
arrows, osnap dropdown) so nothing reads smaller than the toggle icons.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Keep the right-side status-bar tools from being pushed off the bar when a
drawing has many layouts: the layout tabs now live in a horizontal scrollable
that only takes the space left between the menu and the tools, with ‹ › arrows
(and the mouse wheel) to scroll them.
Repurpose the leftmost hamburger — which previously fired a no-op MENU command
— to open a dropdown listing Model and every layout (scrollable, current
highlighted); picking one switches to it, an outside click dismisses it.

Continue tidying the flat ui/ root:
- ui/statusbar/: statusbar.rs becomes statusbar/mod.rs (its
crate::ui::statusbar::* paths are preserved) and absorbs
statusbar_config.rs + statusbar_menu.rs.
- ui/window/: the standalone manager/dialog windows move here —
about, layout_manager, page_setup, plugin_manager, shortcuts,
layers, update_notice, open_progress. The crate::ui::LayerPanel
re-export is repointed so callers are unchanged.
Call sites repointed to the new paths; no compat re-exports beyond the
existing LayerPanel one. ui/ root drops from 21 to 10 flat files with
five subdirs (ribbon, style, popup, statusbar, window).
