Three reviewers over the in-place save, the paste/print/capture bundle, and the upstream merge: two blockers, six majors — all fixed. In-place save (blocker + 2 majors): - A stale retained handle could receive bytes serialized for a DIFFERENT format (Save As .dwg->.dxf whose re-pick failed wrote DXF bytes through the .dwg handle) or silently save in place while the user was told a copy was downloading. The serialized format now travels to completion (tab-keyed pending map), the write requires a matching handle extension AND a live tab, and a failed re-pick drops the old handle before the download fallback. - Discarding an unsaved tab leaked its handle, and a serialization still in flight could then overwrite the real file the user just declined to save. Discard drops the handle; a tab-gone completion downloads instead of writing. - Overlapping saves had no guard (native has one): a wasm in-flight slot refuses a second save with the same localized message, cleared on every exit path. Paste/print/capture (blocker + 2 majors): - pasted_image_name built its timestamp from Date::new(0) — a CONSTANT name, so every paste overwrote every earlier paste's image (the registry is last-wins; the first entity then displayed the second paste's pixels). Real clock, milliseconds, and a collision-suffixed unique name now, with the pure logic tested. - The beforeprint snapshot read the canvas outside the frame — blank on WebGL2 (no preserveDrawingBuffer). The print image is now kept WARM: refreshed on redraw frames (throttled to 2 s, skipped when hidden), so it is ready before the browser ever prints. - A capture op in a hidden tab wedged the ENTIRE automation channel (frames never fire, the pending op blocked every settle). Intake now fails fast when hidden, and a 5 s watchdog expires a parked capture with a clear error. Merge residue (3 majors): - The 9 upstream XREF-bind tests lost in resolution are restored verbatim (the bind feature shipped untested). - The XREF manager panel reported registry-loaded xrefs as NotFound on web — stat now consults the registry first (wasm), with a regression test. - Snap: our endpoint map gained the closing-segment wraparound pair (survey-scale closed polylines kept cm-level precision on the last edge), and the 3D-snap gate no longer suppresses the 2D edge wire when the F4 system is disabled (solid edges were snappable by NEITHER system); the setting is mirrored to the scene with invalidation, and the test that encoded the old bug now pins the fallback.

Open CAD Studio
Open-source 2D drafting and 3D modeling for desktop and web, built with Rust.

Overview
Open CAD Studio is a cross-platform application for technical drawing, layout work, and solid modeling. It reads and writes DWG and DXF drawings natively, with a shared editing core across the desktop and browser versions.
The project is under active development. Keep backups of important production drawings and report reproducible problems through GitHub Issues.
Highlights
- Native drawing workflow — open, edit, recover, and save DWG and DXF files without a conversion service.
- Precise 2D drafting — lines, polylines, curves, splines, hatches, object snaps, tracking, layers, blocks, and external references.
- Documentation tools — text, dimensions, leaders, tolerances, tables, model space, paper space, viewports, and plot styles.
- Kernel-backed 3D modeling — solid primitives, extrusion, revolution, sweep, loft, Boolean operations, and ACIS entity tessellation.
- GPU rendering — accelerated 2D and 3D viewports through
wgpu, with orthographic and perspective cameras. - Extensible workflows — native plugins, command scripts, headless conversion, and a line-based JSON automation API.

Desktop or web
Use the web app for immediate access with no installation. Drawings are selected through the browser and saved as local downloads.
The web app also accepts a ?file= URL parameter, so a shared or embedded link can open a drawing directly: ?file=<url-encoded https://example.com/plan.dwg> fetches and opens that drawing (only http(s) URLs ending in a .dwg/.dxf name), while ?file=plan.dwg reopens a drawing previously opened in the same browser. Opening from another origin is announced on the command line before the fetch starts.
Use the desktop application for native file associations, file-manager thumbnails, system printing, PDF output, external plugins, command scripts, and headless automation. Release builds are available for Windows, Linux, and Apple Silicon macOS.
Install
Download all current packages from the latest release.
Windows
Choose one of these signed x86-64 packages:
OpenCADStudio-*-windows-x86_64-installer.msi— recommended installer with Start Menu shortcuts, DWG/DXF file associations, and drawing thumbnails.OpenCADStudio-*-windows-x86_64-portable.exe— standalone application; no installation required.
Linux
Download the x86-64 AppImage, make it executable, and run it:
chmod +x OpenCADStudio-*-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./OpenCADStudio-*-linux-x86_64.AppImage
macOS
The published macOS package supports Apple Silicon:
- Download
OpenCADStudio-*-macos-arm64.dmg. - Open the image and drag
OpenCADStudio.appinto Applications. - If Gatekeeper blocks the first launch, approve the app from System Settings → Privacy & Security.
The application is ad-hoc signed but is not currently notarized by Apple.
Languages
Open CAD Studio can follow the system language or use any of these 21 interface languages:
Arabic · Brazilian Portuguese · Bulgarian · Czech · Dutch · English · Finnish · French · German · Greek · Hindi · Hungarian · Italian · Japanese · Korean · Polish · Russian · Simplified Chinese · Spanish · Traditional Chinese · Turkish
Change the language from the application settings. The browser version also uses the browser's preferred locale when System is selected.
Build from source
Desktop
Requirements:
- Git
- Current stable Rust toolchain
- Platform graphics and font development libraries
On Ubuntu or Debian, install the native dependencies with:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-dev libx11-dev libxcursor-dev libxi-dev \
libxrandr-dev libxkbcommon-dev libwayland-dev libfontconfig1-dev \
libfreetype6-dev
Then build and run:
git clone https://github.com/HakanSeven12/OpenCADStudio.git
cd OpenCADStudio
cargo build --release --bin OpenCADStudio
The resulting binary is written to target/release/OpenCADStudio (OpenCADStudio.exe on Windows).
Web
Install the WebAssembly target and build tools once:
rustup target add wasm32-unknown-unknown
cargo install trunk wasm-bindgen-cli
Start the development server:
trunk serve
Build the deployable bundle (runs the release Trunk build, then re-syncs and
verifies web/fonts in dist/app/fonts, so the fonts the app fetches can
never go missing from the bundle):
sh scripts/build-web.sh
The bundle ships a service worker (web/sw.js, deployed at /app/sw.js) that caches the app shell: after a first online visit registers it, the assets are captured on the following visit and the app then starts fully offline, the ~55 MB wasm bundle served from the browser cache instead of re-downloaded. A long-lived installed window keeps running its current version until all its tabs close (no mid-session disruption); the next launch picks up the update. build-web.sh stamps a hash of the finished bundle into sw.js as the cache version, so every deploy ships a fresh cache and stale ones are cleaned up automatically. /app/ carries its own web app manifest, so the editor itself can be installed as a standalone app.
Automation
The desktop binary supports one-shot conversion, a persistent headless server, and a client-neutral MCP endpoint for AI applications:
OpenCADStudio --export input.dwg output.dxf
OpenCADStudio --serve
OpenCADStudio --serve --port 4242
OpenCADStudio --mcp
The automation server exchanges one JSON object per line over standard input/output or a local TCP socket. The self-contained MCP endpoint exposes the live desktop editor through the same tools to every compatible client. To connect a client, configure it to launch OpenCADStudio --mcp. See the MCP control guide.
Plugins
Desktop plugins run in separate processes and communicate with the host through the versioned plugin API. The browser build does not load native plugins.
