A text-heavy sheet re-emitted every glyph occurrence as a full page-
space outline (~4 KB per character at f32 round-trip precision), so
PRINT of a simple Vietnamese-text A4 produced ~128 MB. Each unique
glyph is now baked once into a shared compressed Form XObject keyed
by atlas tile (mirroring the image XObject cache, shared across
pages); repeats replay one cm + /Do. Glyph path points, CTM entries,
and decoration quads round to 0.01 pt (~3.5 µm, visually lossless);
run-level colors dedupe outside the per-glyph q/Q so state persists;
the stroke-font pen is re-set per glyph under its CTM, pre-divided by
the quad's area scale.
200-entity Vietnamese repro: 51.5 MB -> 1.28 MB (40x, ~99 B per
glyph occurrence); stroke-font pages 2.0x; hatch/polyline pages
byte-identical. Validated lossless by 300 dpi Ghostscript pixel diff
(residuals confined to 2 px glyph-edge phase) and pypdf structure
check. Raster quality presets and vector geometry are untouched.
Three attack agents (state-machine tracing, executable input fuzzing,
browser-API review) found two breaks and several degradations; all are
fixed here, with the fuzzer's 22 tests kept as regression suites.
Breaks:
- Untitled tabs (and dot-names like ".dxf") autosave as DXF, but the
restore name defaulted to .dwg — the worker dispatches its reader by
the name's extension, so the only copy of unsaved work could never
be restored and was re-offered forever. recovered_name now uses the
worker's rsplit('.') convention and defaults extensionless names to
dxf, matching new-document serialization.
- " (recovered)" stacked one suffix per crash-restore cycle; the
marker is now stripped idempotently before appending.
- Opening a file (Ctrl+O / OPEN / automation) while a web open was in
flight clobbered it: the in-flight open's bytes were lost and every
queued restore prompt stalled for the session. on_open_file now
refuses while an open is running (web only).
Hardening:
- Escape on the Recover Drawing modal defers instead of deleting the
only snapshot; the Discard button still removes it.
- A cap-rejected restore enqueue warns in-app and re-offers the next
snapshot; the drop queue cap rises to 32.
- Exiting mid-round no longer races snapshot removals (deferrals are
drained, the sweep skips while a round is in flight); closing a tab
with "Don't save" now also removes its web snapshot; the snapshot
key derivation is shared via web_autosave_key.
- The plot-preview overlay no longer leaks a full PDF copy per preview
(the Download closure lives in a replaceable registry).
- A corrupt autosave index.json fails the round/boot instead of
silently resetting every row; plot pages with non-finite or non-
positive sheet dimensions error instead of emitting a NaN MediaBox.
- The drop filter accepts dot-less "DWG"/"dxf" names the worker
parses (same rsplit convention on both gates).
Second review pass found the restore marker matched WebFileOpened by
display name: any same-named open finishing while the recovered one
was still queued deleted the only copy. The snapshot key now travels
with the queued file (tagged queue entries), the marker records the
open id assigned at dispatch, and success, failure, and cancel all
match that id. Cancelling an unrelated open no longer clears a
pending restore marker.
Also: the boot scan removes dead index rows (missing or zero-byte
snapshot files) that no other path could discard, and the drop
listener install only latches when the listeners really registered.
Review of the drop-open and autosave commits surfaced one blocker and
five majors; all are fixed here, and two claims in the autosave commit
message are corrected by this one: tab close does NOT clear a snapshot
(matches native .sv$ semantics — saving, restoring, discarding, exit,
and the capped boot scan do), and serialization runs on the main
thread between awaits, not off the paint path.
- The restore prompt can no longer appear with no entries (empty
"Recover Drawing" modal on every boot once the autosave dir exists).
- Restore no longer consumes the snapshot before the open succeeds:
the recovered drawing goes through the guarded drop queue, and the
snapshot is deleted only after the tab opens; cancel or parse
failure keeps the only copy.
- Saving during an autosave round defers its snapshot cleanup until
the round finishes, so a stale round can no longer resurrect a
snapshot newer than the save.
- The boot scan no longer deletes snapshots by mtime comparison
(re-opening a drawing refreshes the recent copy's mtime, which
silently destroyed wanted snapshots); GC is now a 16-entry cap with
oldest-first eviction.
- OPFS write failures abort the writable stream (a leaked lock could
stall the same-key writer and disable autosave for the session), and
DOMException errors now carry their name/message.
- Empty (crash-window) snapshots are never offered; an unreadable one
warns and stays discardable instead of looping forever.
- Drop-open polish: reads start inside the handler and complete in
drop order (legacy WebKit safety, deterministic multi-file order),
dragenter is canceled too, the install guard only latches on
success, non-drawing drops don't steal propagation, a lock-poison
panic can't cross into JS, and re-dropping an open drawing no
longer risks clobbering an in-flight open (it re-queues).
- The model-space sheet floor is per-axis (a thin 8x400 mm profile
keeps its length) and centers content on the enlarged page.
The web build had no autosave: on_autosave was a no-op and the
subscription was native-only. Both gates are gone; every savetime tick
now serializes each dirty tab (same pre-serialize sync as the web save
path, no thumbnail, serialized serially off the critical paint path)
into a dedicated opencadstudio-autosave OPFS directory, keyed by
drawing name, without touching the dirty flag, downloads, or recents.
On boot the web app scans that directory and offers any snapshot
newer than the last saved copy in a localized Recover Drawing modal
(Restore opens it as "name (recovered).dwg" through the standard
open pipeline; Discard removes it; Escape discards). Saving or
closing a drawing clears its snapshot; the boot scan also garbage-
collects stale entries. run_web now requests navigator.storage.persist
so settings and OPFS data survive browser eviction.
STLOUT/STEPOUT wrote via std::fs and IMPORTOBJ read via std::fs, all
of which fail on wasm32. The export pickers now mirror the PDF path
(pick_*_owned returns a name-only PathBuf; the browser download names
the file) and the write tail swaps fs::write for sys::download_bytes.
OBJ import reads the picked file's bytes directly, like the web open
picker.
Opening by drag-and-drop was dead on the web build: winit never emits
FileDropped there. A wasm-gated io::web_drop module installs DOM
dragover/drop listeners, filters .dwg/.dxf, reads the File bytes
async, and queues them; the existing 50 ms PollWebControl tick drains
the queue into the same open path the picker uses (progress overlay,
recovery, OPFS recent cache).
Also floors the model-space plot sheet: extents smaller than 10 mm
(or the 0x0 paper a fresh unsaved drawing carries) now fall back to
the standard sheet instead of producing a ~3 pt page.
Three reviewers (security, correctness, performance) converged on:
- Download PDF died on the second click: Closure::once_into_js throws
when invoked twice. The handler is now a plain FnMut kept for the
overlay's lifetime.
- Rasterisation was bounded by page count, not pixels: 12 A0 sheets at
150 DPI peaked near 1.8 GB of RGBA plus ~1.7 GB of decoded images,
and a drawing declaring absurd paper sizes made the rasteriser
saturate its u16 dimensions into a ~17 GB allocation that aborts the
tab. Preview now computes a uniform DPI under a 64-Mpx total budget
(floor 24 DPI) from the page tree before allocating, with a per-page
4096-px edge clamp.
- Overlays stacked when previewing twice and their blob URLs were only
revoked via Close. The overlay is now single-instance (id-tagged);
a replacement or Close revokes every URL through a shared registry.
- emit_image resampled before probing the XObject cache, so a title
block placed on 12 layouts ran 12 Lanczos passes to embed once.
The cache is now probed with the target dimensions first.
- Preview downloads are named {stem}_preview.pdf instead of a constant
plot_preview.pdf, and the page label says 'first N of M' when the
preview is capped while the PDF keeps every page.
AutoCAD's plot preview renders the plotted result on screen instead of
producing a file. The web build now does the same: the plotted PDF bytes
are rasterised with the hayro pipeline already used for PDF underlays
(150 DPI, first 12 pages) and shown in an in-page overlay with
Download-PDF and Close actions.
The previous strategy opened a new tab via window.open from the async
plot task; browsers withhold popups without a live user gesture, and
embedded hosts ship no PDF viewer plugin at all — so the fallback
download fired and preview behaved like an export. Plain PNG <img>
elements need neither permission.
Trunk passes TRUNK_STAGING_DIR as an extended-length path (\?\C:\...)
on Windows, which MSYS sh tools cannot stat, so post_build failed and
the whole web build aborted. Strip the prefix with sed before use;
Linux CI paths are unaffected. Also apply rustfmt to pdf_export.rs.
- pdf_export: drop the stale wasm32 gates (printpdf 0.9.1 compiles for
wasm; the memchr/lopdf incompatibility is gone with memchr 2.8.3).
Rendering is portable via render_pdf_bytes; only persistence differs:
atomic temp-file write on desktop, browser download on the web.
pick_pdf_path_owned on wasm returns a virtual path so the existing
message flow works unchanged.
- printpdf moves from the native-only dependency table to the shared one.
- print_to_printer: preview_page_pdf / preview_pages_pdf render the same
bytes and open them in a browser tab on the web (the browser's print
dialog takes over); desktop keeps the temp-PDF + OS-viewer flow.
- sys: open_bytes_in_new_tab (blob URL, popup-blocked falls back to a
download).
- New PlotQuality preset caps embedded raster resolution (High = native,
Normal = 300 DPI, Low = 150 DPI effective); vector output is untouched.
The image resource cache keys on the post-resample dims so one pixels
Arc placed at different effective DPIs embeds per-placement XObjects.
Saving a plot style table wrote every value of its custom lineweight table
with two decimals, so a pen such as 0.035 mm came back as 0.04 mm after a
save and reload, and every color using it plotted with the wrong weight.
Write the lineweights in full, through the same formatting the scale factor
already uses, which keeps the decimal point on a whole value.

The vertex-normal fallback compared the cross product's length with
f64::EPSILON, an area-scale threshold, so a valid triangle small enough
fell back to the leaning vertex normal again. Fall back only when the
cross product is zero.

The vertex-normal fallback compared the cross product's length with
f32::EPSILON, an area-scale threshold, so a valid facet with 1e-4 edges
(cross product 1e-8) took the leaning vertex normal again. Fall back only
when the cross product is zero.

PlotStyleTable::to_text wrote scale_factor with one decimal, and saving
from the plot style panel rewrites the whole loaded table. A table with
apply_factor on and scale_factor=0.25 came back as 0.2, thinning every
scaled lineweight by a fifth.
Write the factor in full, keeping the decimal point on a whole value.

In a .lin file the description is optional and the comma goes with it, so
"*PLAIN" followed by "A,.5,-.25" is a complete definition. parse only kept
a header that contained a comma, so such a linetype was dropped silently
and a CENTERLTYPE naming it then reported that it was not loaded.
Take the whole header as the name when there is no comma.

build_stl took the facet normal from the first vertex's normal whenever the
mesh had normals. On smoothed meshes (tessellated curved solids, OBJ imports
with vn) that normal leans off the triangle, while STL defines the facet
normal as the triangle's own unit normal.
Use the triangle's own normal, and keep the vertex normal only for a
triangle with no area. Meshes without normals export as before.

build_step took the PLANE normal from the first vertex's normal whenever
the mesh had normals. On smoothed meshes (tessellated curved solids, OBJ
imports with vn) that normal leans off the triangle, so the plane missed
two of the face's corners and the first edge was no longer perpendicular
to the placement axis.
Use the triangle's own normal, and keep the vertex normal only for a
triangle with no area. Meshes without normals export as before.

Scene meshes store each position as an f32 half plus a low residual so
geometry stays precise at survey coordinates, and the renderer adds the
two back together. STEP export read only the f32 half. Near x = 500000
that half steps in 1/32 units, so a solid at 500000.123 was written as
500000.125, and the edge directions and planes were built from the same
snapped points.
Build each exported vertex from both halves in f64 and derive directions
and the fallback face normal from those. Meshes without a residual export
as before.

IMPORTOBJ only computed face normals when the file listed no normals at
all. When a file did list some, a face that omitted its normal indices,
or pointed at an index past the end of the list, kept a zero normal. That
zero reaches the mesh shader, which normalizes it for lighting.
Track which vertices got a normal from the file and give the rest their
face normal. Supplied normals are kept, and a file without normals is
handled as before.

Builds from main reported only the release version (2026.36) even when
HEAD was hundreds of commits past the tag. build.rs now also emits
OCS_TAG_DISTANCE, OCS_COMMIT_DATE, OCS_BUILD_METADATA and
OCS_FULL_VERSION: a clean checkout of the release tag stays "2026.36",
anything else becomes "2026.36+194.gef189d77", with ".dirty" appended
for uncommitted changes and only the hash when no tag can be counted
from (shallow clone, tarball). OCS_APP_VERSION is unchanged so the
update check, donation gate, User-Agents and window title keep working.
The About dialog gains Build / Commit date / Profile cards, Copy Info,
the REPORT issue template and recovery reports carry the full version,
and `-V`/`--version` print it instead of Cargo's 2026.36.0. Release
workflows check out full history so release binaries see the tag.
Also fixes the build being marked dirty when there is no repository:
diff-index exits 128 there, not 1.

Resolve curve intersections through cadkernel, retain empty exact results, gather analytic candidates independently of tessellation, and bound material uploads. Preserve large MINSERT data while limiting rendering work; remove obsolete review narratives.
Automation's "open" op called io::load_bytes directly and installed
the result as-is, skipping everything the canonical path-based loader
(load_file_for_open / finalize_loaded_outcome) runs after parsing:
block-origin normalization for legacy non-zero-origin blocks,
relative raster/material path resolution, source_path assignment,
and the corrupt-entity purge the UI open path always applies. The
same file opened two ways behaved differently, and headless/automation
use was more exposed to malformed geometry with no filter at all.
Added io::load_bytes_finalized(path, bytes), which runs load_bytes
plus that same normalization and purge using the real path (not just
its basename, which the old code passed to load_bytes as the "name"
parameter — losing the directory needed for raster-path resolution
and source_path). automation.rs's "open" handler now uses it and
reports the purge count as a "purged" field in the response.
load_bytes itself is unchanged, since the byte round-trip tests
(sketch_persist.rs, named_parameters_persist.rs) deliberately want
the simpler byte-only path with no real filesystem path behind it.
New test constructs a document with one normal and one corrupt
(zero-radius) entity, saves it, opens it through automation, and
checks the corrupt entity was purged and source_path was set —
proving the automation path now matches the UI path.

Two independent MINSERT (array INSERT) bugs found while auditing
render_graph.rs:
1. array_offsets() reserved and filled one Vec element per array
instance, with row_count/column_count parsed as unchecked u16s.
A corrupt or adversarial 65535x65535 pair requests 4,294,836,225
instances (~96 GiB) before any GPU-side chunking limit can help,
and before the render graph even reaches the GPU. Fixed with a
documented instance budget (20,000) enforced at both the load-time
corrupt-entity filter (is_entity_corrupt, matching the existing
polyline/spline vertex-count guards) and a failsafe clamp in
array_offsets itself, for an insert built or edited some other way.
2. insert_instance_transform composed the per-instance row/column
offset translation *before* the INSERT's own transform, so the
block's x/y scale multiplied the spacing along with the block
contents — an INSERT with x-scale 2 and column spacing 10 rendered
20 units between columns instead of 10. The pinned CAD model's own
Insert::array_points() confirms the correct behavior: spacing
rotates with the insert but is never scaled. Fixed by orienting the
offset with rotation + OCS only, then translating the already-
composed (scaled) instance transform by that world-space vector.
7 new tests cover both: pathological/reasonable instance counts at
the load-time filter and the render-graph failsafe, and instance
transforms for scaled and rotated arrays.

Use atomic file operations (write to temp file, then rename) instead of
direct File::create() to avoid crashes when the target PDF is locked by
another process (e.g., open in PDF reader). The new write_pdf_atomically()
function ensures the file is either fully written or left unchanged, with
a clear error message if the file is in use.

The previous commit's Apple Event handler only ever catches an open
sent to an already-running process. A cold double-click (app not
running yet) still failed: every registration point tried inside the
real binary — before app::run(), on the Subscription's first poll,
even the literal first statement of main() — reliably caught a warm
open but never the original cold-launch event. A raw
AEInstallEventHandler in a separate, minimal, non-AppKit process (no
winit/iced, just a manual CFRunLoopRunInMode pump) still missed it
too, ruling out "the real binary's heavy dependency graph loading
before main() wins the race" as the explanation.
What does reliably catch a cold launch, verified against real
Finder-equivalent opens: a from-scratch NSApplication with its own
delegate implementing application:openURLs: — in a process where we
own setDelegate: from the start, with no contention over the single
delegate slot winit already claims. That has to be a separate process
from the real GUI binary (only one -[NSApplication run] call can own a
process), so src/bin/ocs_launcher.rs is now the .app's actual
CFBundleExecutable: a small, dependency-light binary (no iced, wgpu,
or cadkernel) whose only job is to catch the open and relay it.
Relaying by replacing this process's image (exec, same PID) or by
spawning a child and exiting turned out to both be dead ends: Launch
Services tracks "the running instance of this bundle" by the
Application Serial Number it handed out to whichever process it
actually launched — this launcher, not whatever it execs into or
spawns. Once the launcher's own ASN stopped pointing at a live,
listening process, every later open Finder tried to deliver silently
went nowhere (measured with lsappinfo against a real second "Open
With", not assumed). So the launcher now stays running for the app's
session — invisible, via NSApplicationActivationPolicyAccessory, since
it owns no window — and relays every open (cold or warm) over the same
channel a second CLI invocation already uses: io::single_instance.
That relay only worked once single_instance's rendezvous key stopped
being computed from the running executable's own path. That was fine
when one binary always did the job, but the launcher and the real
binary are different executables and independently computed different
ports, so they could never find each other. Anchor the key on the
enclosing .app bundle instead, shared by both.
packaging/build_macos_signed.sh and .github/workflows/release.yml now
build ocs_launcher and place it at Contents/MacOS/OpenCADStudio (the
CFBundleExecutable Info.plist already names), with the real GUI binary
renamed to Contents/MacOS/OpenCADStudio-App alongside it.

Double-click / "Open With" never puts the file on argv — Finder always
delivers it as a kAEOpenDocuments Apple Event instead, which nothing in
this app listened for, so it just showed "cannot open files in this
format" even though the file association itself was registered
correctly.
The standard fix, implementing application:openURLs: on this app's own
NSApplicationDelegate, isn't available here: winit already installs
its own delegate to own window/lifecycle events, NSApplication has
exactly one delegate slot, and winit's class doesn't implement the
open-document method.
This bypasses the delegate protocol and registers directly with the
lower-level Apple Event Manager (AEInstallEventHandler) instead — the
same mechanism AppKit's delegate forwarding is itself built on, and
independent of who owns the delegate. Registration happens on the
iced Subscription's first poll rather than in main() before app::run()
— registering earlier gets silently overwritten by winit's own
NSApplication startup, confirmed by testing against a real `open -a`
rather than assumed from Apple's docs.
This handles a file opened while the app is already running. A cold
launch (app not running yet) needs a different mechanism, in the
following commit.

The 52 s silent stretch in a large-DWG open could not be attributed:
OpenTimings covered parse / purge / xref / caches, but the FINALIZING
phase -- prepare_open_geometry, which does the first full Model
tessellation and builds the interaction index -- was unmeasured and
reports only two progress ticks, so it was indistinguishable from parse
time.
Add finalize_ms to OpenTimings and a per-stage PERF breakdown:
open-phases parse / purge / xref / caches / finalize
open-finalize tessellation vs interaction index
open-index index build vs prepare_screen
wires-build sort cache, visible filter, block cache, classify,
memo hits, parallel tessellate, materialize, sort
resident-post scene markers, refedit fade, resident layout
wire-upload build_wire_buffers, which runs on the render thread
The wires-build line separates the parallel tessellate from the serial
materialize loop that deep-clones every WireModel while the memo retains
a second copy -- the leading hypothesis for both the stall and the
6.45 GB RSS.
No behaviour change. Every timer is gated on crate::perf::enabled(), so
nothing runs without PERF=1 or the in-app PERF panel. The localized
open-summary format string is left alone; changing it would rekey the
string across every locale, so the full breakdown goes to PERF instead.

Style selectors (Standard, layer, Color/Linetype/Lineweight) sat at
different heights across ribbon panels because each combo panel
vertically centered its content: panels with fewer icon rows
(Multiline Text, Table) centered their dropdown differently than
panels with two rows (Dimensions, Multileader).
- Pin all combo panels (Layers, Properties, style combos) to the top
of the fixed 3-row panel with a shared COMBO_PANEL_PAD, so every
primary dropdown shares one baseline regardless of icon-row count
- Extract the duplicated tool-row and panel-container code into
tool_row() / combo_panel_col() helpers + named spacing constants
- Bundle the per-view render state into RenderCtx, shrinking
render_large/render_large_dropdown from 12-14 positional args to
(item, &ctx)
- print_to_printer: silence the Windows-only dead-code warning on
PrintOptions::quality with the platform split documented (the field
